Unit Guide: Liao’s Rangers

Liao’s Rangers are the third unit to ride out from the icy mists of Season VI: Scourge of Winter. Modelled on Fire Lancers, the unit is able to thrive in the harsh Ostarian winter while withstanding the most searing battlefield attacks.

Unlocking

You first need a unit of Fire Lancers to promote. You will receive one after completing the first stage of Season VI unit challenges. After Stage 4 you will receive the Liao’s Rangers Promotion, which will allow you to promote your Fire Lancers into a unit of Liao’s Rangers. The new unit will carry over all Unit XP and its level and doctrines, while Veterancy Points will be returned. You can read more about Promoted Units here.

Gameplay

More firework than firearm, the Fire Lance is a curious weapon. Devastating at close range, its wielder can simply “fire and forget” as they close ranks with the enemy, before turning their literal boomstick into a crude but effective cudgel. Liao’s Rangers have taken this tactic to the extreme, and can to order a point-blank Bludgeon shot to soak up increased amounts of incoming ranged damage, before cracking skulls and taking names with a withering Blunt attack. A unit of Liao’s Rangers doesn’t deviate much from the Fire Lancer template, but you get more proverbial bang for your buck.

Progression

Liao’s Rangers have a maximum unit level of 30, with Veterancy Points investable across two branches. The top branch generally improves the unit’s Fire Lance ability, later unlocking and augmenting the Blast skill. The lower branch favours the unit’s melee abilities by increasing Bludgeon damage and reducing the skill’s cooldown.
